Kybella

What is Kybella?

Kybella™ is a revolutionary new non-surgical treatment specifically designed to reduce submental fullness, the area under the chin (also known as a “double chin”). Kybella™ is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for the submental area (“double chin”). Double chins are a common condition that can occur due to aging, weight fluctuations, and possibly even genetics. For some individuals, no matter how much they diet or exercise, the double chin does not go away. Double chins often make people look “heavier” and older than their actual age. The active ingredient in Kybella™ is deoxycholic acid (a naturally-occurring chemical in your body) that permanently destroys the fat cells of your double chin. Kybella™ is a non-human, non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid.

How does Medspa1064 approach Kybella treatments?

Using our understanding of how Kybella works in the body, our knowledge of the anatomy of the face, and our comprehensive approach to our patients, we will custom tailor a treatment plan to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. After a detailed consultation with our physician, the procedure is a 15-20 minute in-office injection treatment that is customized to help you get to your aesthetic goals.

How many treatments will I need?

Kybella™ can be a single treatment, but in most individuals requires a series of two to four treatments to reach their desired goal. Although uncommon, some patients may require up to six treatments to reach their aesthetic result. Each treatment is administered approximately 6 to 8 weeks apart as determined by our doctor. Results are typically seen within 6 to 8 weeks after each treatment. Our physician will customize a treatment plan to align with your aesthetic goals.

How long will my results last?

After the series of treatments and once your aesthetic goals are achieved, most patients do not require re-treatment. The fat cells are permanently destroyed and can no longer accumulate further fat.

What can I expect on the day of the procedure?

The actual injections take about 15-20 minutes. We advise you take an over-the-counter pain reliever one hour before your appointment. Although the procedure is quite tolerable, we will apply ice to the area being treated for your added comfort. After the treatment, ice may be re-applied for 10-15 minutes or as needed to help with discomfort.

What medications should I avoid prior to treatment?

Patients should discuss exact medication lists with us and their primary care physician prior to stopping medications, but substances such as aspirin, ibuprofen, alcohol, omegas, flaxseed oil, fish oil, vitamin D3, and vitamin E are typically avoided for three to five days prior to treatment at the discretion of your primary care physician.

What can I expect after the procedure?

Fat cells typically begin to dissolve within 10-15 minutes post treatment. Patients most commonly experience swelling, redness and bruising which are temporary and resolve on their own.  Although the process of dissolving fat takes place fairly quickly, the body’s inflammatory response to the injection can take 3-5 weeks to subside.

Is Kybella safe?

Kybella has been FDA approved for the treatment of submental fat after being extensively studied in over 20 clinical trials. While the injections are safe, it’s important to be treated by a trained professional with knowledge of facial anatomy as an injection too close to the marginal mandibular nerve can cause a temporary injury that would affect the appearance of the mouth. It is also important to see someone specialized in all aspects of facial aesthetics to determine whether or not you are a candidate for Kybella.

What are potential side effects of Kybella injection?

The most commonly reported adverse reactions in clinical trials were: redness, swelling, bruising, pain, numbness and areas of firmness in the treated area. Very rarely, nerve injury leading to numbness and muscle weakness, dysphagia or difficulty swallowing can be seen. Most of these side effects resolved spontaneously.
